Working predominantly with acrylics, artist Elizabeth Azadi draws her inspiration from a personal journey of survival. Born in Tehran Iran in 1979 during a time of great tumult, revolutionary, and political upheaval, it was a yearning for freedom that made escaping Iran a necessity for her family. Journeying from one refugee camp to another where she was exposed to a range of people and living conditions, she experienced the fear, uncertainty, struggle, and surrender as well as the friendship, hope, love, and faith that ultimately shaped her identity and taught her the importance of freedom. It is no coincidence that “Azadi” is the Farsi translation for “freedom”.

Raised in California, Elizabeth received a degree in Construction Management and enjoyed a successful career as an interior designer. Eventually moving to New York City, she received a second degree in Fashion Design and began painting shortly after. Her works are often rooted in the memories of her childhood where the themes of struggle, hope, faith, and freedom dominate.

Abstract painting provides the freedom to convey emotions, ideas, and interpretations without the constraints of realistic depiction. Each brushstroke becomes a form of communication, allowing Elizabeth to connect with viewers on a deeper, subjective level.

“It's a journey of exploration, where the canvas becomes a space for personal narratives, experimentation, and the pure joy of creating something uniquely one's own.” says Elizabeth.

She currently resides in New York City.
