Born in Tehran, Iran, amidst the turbulent winds of the Iranian Revolution, Elizabeth Azadi's earliest life was defined by the sudden, tragic loss of freedom. This ignited an unyielding yearning for liberty that made escaping the country a necessity for her family. Their perilous journey during the Iran-Iraq War saw them trapped in a refugee camp in Baghdad—an experience where the pursuit of self-determination became a life-or-death reality. This foundational struggle for freedom ultimately became the catalyst for her life as a visual artist.
From a young age, Elizabeth found solace and an essential, boundless space for expression through art. Her schoolwork was consistently eclipsed by a dense tapestry of doodles and drawings; art gave her the freedom to dream and to create. This passion was inherited from her father, a former muralist in Iran.
After immigrating to the United States, Elizabeth pursued a structured path, earning a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management and working successfully as a project manager. Yet, the job felt profoundly unfulfilling. Her heart persistently yearned for a more creative pursuit, guiding her first to Interior Design and then, in 2007, to New York City to immerse herself in the arts. While there, she attended the Art Institute of NYC for Fashion Design and after graduating started her own clothing lABEL.
It was during inspirational trips to NYC’s galleries and museums that Elizabeth found her true calling to return to her one true love: painting. On the canvas, she feels utterly liberated, finally able to express the deep narratives and long-sought freedom without the need for words.
Elizabeth Azadi’s work is a powerful distillation of her odyssey. As she puts it, "A blank canvas is my freedom—the ultimate new beginning. The journey is made beautiful by every color, signifying the beauty of life itself." Now residing on the Jersey Shore, she transforms the indelible imprint of her past into a compelling, vibrant vision of the freedom she has finally claimed. Elizabeth currently shows her work in a Gallery in Asbury Park, NJ.
